St Stephen-on-the-Downs Church is an Anglican daughter church of St Martin of Tours Epsom. And it sits on the south side of the Epsom Downs on Rosebery Road, on a site nearby where the original church was located at the end of the path to the famous Epsom racecourse.
The original building was a tin tabernacle. However, the mission church which stood at the site where the car park for Langley Vale Village Hall is today.
In fact, the current church belongs to the parish of Epsom which is part of the diocese of Guildford. And it was built in 1961. So, St Stephen-on-the-Downs Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.
In addition, St Stephen on the Downs serves mainly the community of the Langley Vale area of Epsom. However, the church welcomes people from further afield.
Accordingly, the church building is open on weekdays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on weekends, and Sunday service is at 9:30 AM. And the church also runs a Bible study group which usually meets on Wednesdays.
Among other activities, St Stephen on the Downs holds some special events throughout the year including Harvest Supper in October, a Tea Dance in November and Palm Sunday Breakfast the weekend before Easter.
In addition, St Martin of Tours Epsom also runs mother and toddler groups every Thursday mornings between 9:45 and 11:45 AM at Church House on the main building located in Church Street, Epsom.
The church also provides lots of activities free of charge for children between the ages of 0 and 3 years old. So, the children are offered fruit juice and biscuits plus a mid morning snack. Therefore, this an excellent opportunity for parents and carers to meet and chat over a cup of tea or coffee.
