Especially, Epsom Playhouse is a main theatre in Epsom and Ewell, Surrey. The 450 seat venue hosts internationally travelling casts and comedy as part of their tours and amateur productions. In addition, a smaller 80 seat studio within the playhouse called The Myers Studio is a regular venue for Jazz evenings and children’s shows.
Both, the main auditorium and The Myers Studio when not hosting professional productions, are available for corporate and private hire.
In fact, the Playhouse was opened in 1984 in its current location on the junction of Ashley Avenue and South Street in Epsom town centre. So, initially the venue started out as a community centre, and in January 1984 it held a grand concert to celebrate the official opening.
Although the theatre was officially opened in 1983, at the start the auditorium was shared with The Blood Donation Service. So, the theatre seats were stacked while beds were brought in regularly to serve the blood donors.
There is a space under the theatre seating which is still called The Bleachers, in memory of the Bleacher style stacking seat that was utilised back then.
Accordingly, the Epsom Playhouse was a finalist in the Commitments to the Community category at the Epsom and Ewell Business award in 2016.
In addition, the theatre belongs to Epsom and Ewell Borough Council , and is staffed by 40 volunteers stewards who have dedicated their time to The Playhouse.
Also the volunteers help and advise visitors and customers. Some of the volunteers also direct the marketing. Then the longest serving volunteer has been with the playhouse for 30 years with an estimated stewarding of 8,000 shows.
The theatre is served by the nearby Ashley Centre 24 hour CarPark. In addition, the Epsom Playhouse location is within easy access from London by train service from Waterloo, and Victoria Stations. Access from the south is near the Junction 9 of the M25.
